A Basic Overview Of Kayaks And Kayaking
Kayaking is growing in popularity. Here is a brief discussion on the different ways one can enjoy the sport of kayaking.
At its core, kayaking is simply a method of propelling oneself through a body of water by using ones own power. A special paddle is needed, usually having two curved portions on opposing sides of the paddle, which allows you to move it back and forth. Kayaking is more than just that, though. Lets take a look.
The best literal translation for kayak would be hunting boat. It has been used throughout history by people living on shores to pursue food in the ocean. The kayak originated in the Arctic region, where their early indigenous folk created boats with wooden frames and animal hide for fishing purposes. In todays era, kayaking is more than just for catching fish. Still, the same type of boat is used these days, only with more modern materials.
Kayaks are long, thin and usually one person boats. Since there are different variants of kayaking, the same applies with the boats design. Sea kayaks are very long and thin, which helps them glide easily through the water. For those using their kayaks to travel through the rapids, kayaks are built shorter, making them easier to handle and allowing them to roll upright should they flip over.
There are some kayaks that allow the person using them to sit on them differently, using a flat indention rather than the person sitting inside the kayak itself. Lakes and other calm waters are perfect places to use these kayaks.
As these designs seem to suggest, kayaking comes in a lot of forms. There are kayakers who prefer taking their boats around the bay in Alaska, or in similar places. The more adrenaline-packed ones among us would prefer kayaking in the rapids and would go to the opposite end of the globe at times if they have to.
Kayaking can be both thrilling or relaxing – it all depends on your tastes and preferences. The important thing is that you are happy doing what youre doing and enjoying your kayaking experience.
