Brazil escaped the “Group of Death” after finally hitting their stride against the Ivory Coast – but ended the match with only 10 men after Kaka was controversially sent off.
The South Americans were made to wait for their opening goal until the 25th minute when Luis Fabiano ended his nine-month goal drought with a fine strike from Kaka’s pass.
He then added his second of the night in the 50th minute after beating three defenders before sweeping the ball past goalkeeper Boubacar Barry, despite apparently hanballing.
Elano made it three in the 62nd minute after converting from Kaka’s sweeping pass as their opponents crumbled.
But Didier Drogba did grab a consolation strike with 11 minutes remaining for the Ivory Coast. And Brazil’s night was spoiled when Kaka was dismissed by referee Stephane Lannoy after an off the ball incident with Kader Keita in the 88th minute – a ruling which TV replays showed to be harsh.
