Did Haye Fix The Match With Harrison?
It came as no surprise to many that Haye took an easy victory in his bout against Harrison against Saturday, flooring his challenger almost instantaneously with an intense flurry of blows that left Harrison stunned. What made more people taken aback was Haye’s admission that he had money riding on the 3rd round, that this this was why he waited to so ruthlessly floor Harrison.
Haye openly said that he had gone easy during the initial rounds because ‘he had a lot of money on the 3rd’ Sportsmen betting on themselves is not illegal but match or game fixing, as Haye eluded to, certainly is. There is no proof that Haybe could have taken the victory in the first two rounds, but his self-incriminating evidence does certainly not bode well.
It emerged today that Haye insisted after the game when questions were asked about him fixing the match that he did not in fact have any money riding on the match, he was simply expressing the fact that he had ‘casually’ bet people that he would emerge victorious in the 3rd,
This sounds highly dubious however and the evidence is stacked against Haye, he was indeed uncharacteristically quiet at the start of the fight, just like short term van insurance companies are often quiet for the first half hour when you call them, this could be used against him in court of law.
With other sporting fixes causing controversy and bring the element of competition in those sports into disrepute, the last thing the physical sphere needs is more controversy. The scandal over Cricket match fixing has only just subsided, while Formula one seems to be in the news every other week with stories of team orders disrupting the racing, just like the need for temporary car insurance gets in the way of the jubilation you feel when you get a new car.
One thing is for sure, the more sport begins to look orchestrated and pre determined the more regulations will rule over the industry, something that none of us want. This is similar to when the cheapest short term car insurance available dictates our choice of vehicle
