Divine Influence At The 2010 World Cup?

Not since the 1986 World Cup has there been such controversy over a hand ball when Maradonas shady move changed the course of the tournament and history with his Hand of God goal.

Move on roughly a quarter century to the 2010 World Cup tournament in South Africa and, more specifically, the Uruguay v Ghana quarterfinal. In the closing minutes of the game, Uruguays star striker Luis Suarez ended up saving his club from last minute defeat at the end of extra time with a blatant and deliberate handball right on the goal line.

Punished with a red card for the blatant offense, Suarez strode from the pitch sobbing as Gyan got ready for what appeared to be a sure win for Ghana with one last penalty kick. Unfortunately, luck was not on Ghanas side as the penalty strike came off the crossbar. Uruguays subs ran to alert Suarez of their sudden turn in fortune and a deflated Ghana team was forced into a shootout. The enthused Uruguay went on to win the match against the West Africans in the 4-2 shootout.

With Uruguays advancement in the tournament confirmed, the debate over whether Suarez was a genius savior or a rotten cheat rages on. Although Suarez used his hands with purpose and will now miss the semi-final against Holland, Ghana is now out of the tournament because of Suarezs rule-breaking. As with many decisions in this and previous World Cup tournaments, questions will be asked and the moral view of this situation analysed.

Although red carded and out of the semi-final match, Suarez stated that It was worth it to be sent off in this way. It was complicated and tough. We suffered to the end, but the Hand of God, its mine now.

With the quarter finals to play for, were now heading for the heady climax of the 2010 World Cup tournament. Whatever the outcome of the final in less than a weeks time, this World Cup, as with others in the past, will be recorded in history with its fair share of controversy and, some would say, divine influence.
