Mesut Ozil‘s excellent strike booked Germany a second round clash with bitter foes England as Ghana also managed to sneak qualification on goal difference despite their first defeat in the competition.
Werder Bremen midfielder Ozil struck on the hour to help Joachim Low avoid the ignominy of becoming the first German coach to miss out on qualification for the knockout phase since 1938.
And Low will now attempt to mastermind a victory over Fabio Capello on Sunday, as the old enemies meet for the first time since England’s 2-1 win in a friendly in November 2008. It will be their first encounter in a major finals since the European Championships in 2000.
Ghana will face USA on Saturday night after finishing Group C with a better goal difference than Australia and are the last African team remaining in the World Cup.
