To go with his winners’ medal, Spain’s Xabi Alonso woke up on Monday morning with a painful reminder of what it had taken to win the World Cup – the imprint of Nigel de Jong‘s boot on his chest.
The image of Manchester City’s De Jong, a kick boxer in his youth, planting his foot into Alonso will forever be the perfect summary of the Netherlands’ brutal approach to the final.
Without a decent view of the incident, referee Howard Webb only showed a yellow card for the first-half challenge and Alonso was barely able to influence the game before being withdrawn after the break.
