Only two months before the start of the World Cup, Robin van Persie‘s burning ambition to spearhead the Oranje crusade appeared to be in ruins.

After suffering an ankle injury in the Netherlands’ friendly in Italy last November, the Arsenal striker’s involvement in South Africa looked doubtful and Arsene Wenger‘s own mission to finally bring a Premier League title back to North London was undoubtedly dented as a result.

But while van Persie’s return for Arsenal in the middle of April came too late to rescue Wenger’s dream of silverware, it has given Bert van Marwijk a vital piece of ammunition to make a lasting impression in South Africa.

Even though he only had a month remaining in the English domestic season to work his way back to fitness, the Dutchman did more than enough to ease any fears van Marwijk may have had about him not being ready for such a grand stage.

Now there is every chance the 26-year-old can elevate himself up to the level of superstars of Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney and David Villa. Van Persie has every tool in his armoury to become one of THE players at the World Cup, with his effervescent, expressive team-mates likely to provide him with all the assistance he needs.
