Surf Clothing: The History Of The Surf Brands

The increasing popularity of surfing as a sport was famously portrayed in the movies Back Blanket Bingo and Gidget both produced during the sixties and this was what became the sport of choice for anyone who lived near to a beach.

There was no formal training, mainly because the sport was there to be enjoyed by almost anyone of any age can have a minimum of equipment and surfing was popular. A surf board, the ability to swim and a beach are all that is required to start surfing. Ever since surfing began it has always been a sport where the majority of participants were male but now finally we are starting to see girls being taught how to surf from a very early age. There was also an increase in the amount of surf clothing being produced.

From the 60s to the 80s it would be very unusual to see many women doing water sports at the beach. From surfings early days women were not actively encouraged to take part and it still remains today that surfing is still seen as a male sport although this is starting to change. Currently surfing has never been more popular amongst women and there are surf clothing brands and customised surf boards to support this.

Take a look at little Trixie surf boards and Roxy clothing. Through the 60s numerous surfing accessories (e.g. wetsuits, rash guards and chain) applications was not available for surfers. To keep them warm before the advent of wetsuits, surfers, many of them bare skin, especially in winter, braved the very cold ocean water. This change meant that surfers were now able to go in out on the waves in almost all conditions without having to worry about the temperature of the water.

Wetsuits stick close to the surfers body and are made from neoprene. Wetsuits stick to your body and trap a thin layer of water in the neoprene that gets heated by your natural body heat. Now you can also get gloves and boots that are made from neoprene so that you whole body is covered and you can surf in almost any conditions. Roxy and Quiksilver were pleased to be another addition to the world of surfing.
