Golf Ball Grading System
Mint Condition Golf Balls – Mint balls are almost like brand new ones. The rating of mint balls is similar to a golf ball which has never been played. These balls look and play like brand new balls and so they are a great option for golfers that wish to save money yet play golf with the best quality balls. Mint balls are the same as 5A or Grade 1 balls.
Near Mint or Near Perfect Golf Balls – The next level down is a great option for most golfers. You may be able to see that these balls have been played a little bit more than the mint ones yet they are still extremely playable and will show only very minor abrasions or scuffs. Near Mint balls are also known as 4A or Grade 2 balls.
Very Good or Good Condition Golf Balls – Although still playable, these balls will have less shine and show fading of the surface clear coat. They may also have scuffs and blemishes but they are good enough for the beginner or high handicap golfer that loses a lot of balls. They are also referred to as Grade 3 or 3A golf balls.
Practice Balls – Lastly, there are shag or practice balls. They are very cheap in price but they are showing a lot of wear like strike marks, scuffs, and other marks. They are sometimes called AA or 2A golf balls.
Every company may have a slightly different grading system but if you start from the top grade to the fourth grade, they will be similar to the descriptions above. Buying used golf balls or Recycled Golf Balls makes a lot of sense when you realize that they are carefully graded by professional companies.
