World Cup Shocker! Participating Nations Favour Their Own Teams!

Awarded every 4 years since the tournament first began in 1930, this years FIFA World Cup is the 19th occasion that 32 sides have fought it out on the playing field to demonstrate their footy prowess.

The World Cup in 2010 is a far cry from the contest witnessed in the 1930s: Different rules, superior equipment and, of course, the intricate mix of players from around the globe. One minute the striker plays with a teammate in Arsenal, the next minute theyre the opposition. Has all this damaged some football players patriotism? And how about us, the viewers?

An ongoing FIFA survey of footy fans regarding the teams of England, Germany and Italy offers a fascinating insight into supporters views. It asks These squads are comprised of players solely from their domestic leagues, but which squad is the strongest?

Heres a breakdown of how the different countries voted:

Germans

England 24%

Germany 61%

Italy 15%

English

England 43%

Germany 30%

Italy 26%

Overall

England 43%

Germany 31%

Italy 26%

German fans felt their own squad was the strongest at a massive 61%, with England coming in at 24% and Italy a smaller slice at 15%. Contrarily, English supporters voted the England squad in at a less-than-patriotic 43%, Germany at 30% and Italy 26%. Going by these figures, it seems that German supporters really do stick with their own. Does this mean that England, who has some of the greatest football exports going, has become more sedate in its patriotic stance, even if theyve only won once in 1966 when they were the host nation?

Whatever happened to having a little faith?
